If you told me 15 years ago that licensed physicians were performing bilateral mastectomies on teenage girls for cosmetic purposes, I would not have believed it. If you told me that pediatricians were giving hormone blockers to healthy children in order to reassign their biological sex I would have gently guided you toward psychological counseling. I am confident that any physician who did such a thing at that time would have lost his/her state medical license at the very least. Yet here we are where the unthinkable has become standard of practice and the disfigurement and sterilization of minors is an industry. What does that say about a Society that tolerates and even encourages this? What does that say about the institution of Medicine?
